30 day novel writing challenge

20- If it were made into a movie, which Director would direct it and which band would make the soundtrack

Obviously if I could choose anyone I’d have to pick my favourite director –  Xavier Dolan. He’s not the first one that comes to mind when you think of epic historical movies, I know that, but he does make beautiful lgbtq-themed movies! I also think Andrea Arnold made a very fresh and wonderful interpretation of Wuthering Heights, and Sofia Coppola would be a nice choice also. (I thought answering this would be impossible but now I just come up with more and more names…)

When it comes to bands, though… I’m going to have to say Lana. No one makes music as sad, and haunting, and sexy. Of course I’d love a touch of folk as well (to get that cosy sea shanty feeling), so the best option would probably be a mix of a few voices/genres. *dreams away*

19- Writing Playlist

Yes, I actually have a specific Wavesongs playlist (though I usually listen to instrumental/classical music when I’m writing). It’s a slightly weird mix of sea shanties, David Bowie, Glasvegas and a lot of music from Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag

And of course there’s this great song:

Never fails to make me happy!

18- What stage of editing/ writing are you at?

Currently, I’ve finished editing the book (for now). I finished the original manuscript about 1,5 years ago and since then I’ve gone through various stages of editing, while plotting the next two books in the series (and writing a lot of other things, obviously). I had almost no editing experience at all before I started working on this story, and I’ve learnt so much during the process!

I’m very much looking forward to writing that very first page of book two… it’ll feel strange, to plunge into this world again, and to write new scenes with all the characters I adore so much. But first I’ll need to do a lot of research and planning – another thing I’ve learnt since I first started this project is that researching really should be done before you start writing…

17- Which published book it is most like

I’m a bit wary about making comparisons but if I have to do it, I’d say the book this one mostly resembles is probably Stalking Darkness, part two of Lynn Flewelling‘s Nightrunner series. I’ve written about it before (here) and it’s definitely my favourite among the Nightrunner books. The similarities are, well, the gay love theme, the plethora of characters, and in some way also the fact that there’s a plot in there that has nothing to do with sex and/or relationships. But Lynn Flewelling writes exciting fantasy novels that happen to have gay protagonists, while I write romancey pirate novels where the gay theme is the main one and other parts of the plot are secondary. Still, the Nightrunner books have inspired me a lot and I’d be thrilled if anyone who likes Lynn Flewelling’s books would enjoy this one too. 🙂

16- Describe any other books related to this one (eg. Prequel, sequel, follow up) or If it’s a stand alone, a sequel or prequel that you could write

Wavesongs is the first book in a planned trilogy. And I can’t tell you anything about the remaining two before you’ve read the first one, so… sorry about today’s very short post. Spoilers are bad for you!
